Years ago, there was a man who dedicated his entire life to his passion of painting. Year after year he toiled away producing his original works of art. He went to many different art schools learning various new techniques in order to improve himself and gain favor among his peers. He even began using more vibrant colors in an effort to make his paintings more appealing to those around him. For 10 years he painted wishing to consider himself a success and to make a living doing what he loved. In those industrious 10 years, he sold only one painting.

Shortly before he ended his life, he wrote to a close friend that he believed his life to be "a terrible failure". Vincent Van Gogh was only 37. Eleven years later his work was widely exhibited in Paris, and was already making a noticeable impact on a new generation of artists. Vincent Van Gogh was finally getting the recognition that he deserved. He would have been only 48, had he lived to see his success.

We know, from this story and others, that art can be valued quite differently by different individuals at different times. However, one thing is clear: in order to find valuable or emerging art, one must have a keen eye and the determination and patience to find those hidden gems before they are widely recognized by others. Fortunately for the art investor, as the value of an original or limited edition piece grows, they can benefit from enjoying it as a display. Unlike many other types of investments, this immediate enjoyment of art is it's greatest reward.
